On the 5th of September 2019, a significant Continuing Medical Education (CME) event took place at Hotel Vivanta, Lalitpur, Nepal. The event was jointly organized by the Kathmandu Center for Genomics and Research Laboratory (KCGRL) and its sister concern, NOVA International Diagnostics, situated in Kusunti Height, Lalitpur, Nepal. The CME focused on the theme “Reproductive Genetic Testing: Scenario and Possibilities in Nepal.”
The primary objective of this gathering was to disseminate valuable information about the potential, limitations, and opportunities presented by various genetic testing techniques concerning reproductive health in Nepal. The event was attended by distinguished gynecologists, pathologists, scientists, researchers, scholars, and media representatives actively involved in clinical and medical sciences. The participants hailed from renowned hospitals and infertility centers, as well as esteemed medical colleges and institutes like the Institute of Medicine (IOM), National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), Nepal Medical College (NMC), Dhulikhel Hospital, and many others.
Over 100 attendees were expected to enhance their skills in clinical problem-solving related to genetic diseases, apply newly acquired strategies in their medical practice, and adopt evidence-based and patient-centered approaches to reproductive care.
The event commenced with Dr. Ujwal Thakur, the Chairman of Nova International Diagnostics, providing insights into the laboratory’s vision, future perspectives, and goals, warmly welcoming the guests. He also shared information about the diagnostics center and its associated facilities. Subsequently, Dr. Michael Richardson, a technical expert on reproductive health from Thermo Fisher, outlined the recent trends in reproductive health and shed light on the possible genetic tests and their clinical correlations.
Towards the conclusion of the event, Dr. Nilam Thakur from the National Academy of Medical Sciences emphasized the critical importance of reproductive health in the context of overall development. She highlighted the necessity of accessible healthcare services to ensure safe pregnancies and childbirth, as well as to empower couples with the best chances of having healthy infants. The significance of test results in providing relief from uncertainty and aiding informed decisions about healthcare management was also underscored.
The event’s closing remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Chanda Karki, a renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in the country. Following the enlightening sessions, a productive question and answer session took place, fostering valuable discussions among the attendees. The day culminated in a delightful dinner, offering an opportunity for networking and further exchange of knowledge.
Throughout the event, Dr. Ankita Thakur skillfully played the role of Master of Ceremony (MC), ensuring the smooth flow of the schedule and effectively engaging all esteemed guests. The event’s success was a testament to the collaborative efforts of KCGRL and NOVA International Diagnostics in promoting advancements and prospects in reproductive genetic testing in Nepal.
